For most Nigerian businesses, diesel is not a line item — it is the power supply. Factories, hospitals, estates, schools and telecom sites run generators for hours every day, and a late or short delivery means downtime. Buying well is less about finding the lowest price per litre and more about getting the full quantity, of the right quality, when you need it.

1. Know your real consumption

Before you ask for quotes, work out how many litres you burn per week and how much your tank can safely receive. Tankers commonly carry 33,000 litres, with larger trucks at 45,000 or 60,000 litres. If your tank cannot take a full load, agree a split delivery up front rather than discovering it at the gate.

2. Ask for a written quotation

A proper quotation states the product, quantity, price per litre, delivery location, delivery window, payment terms and how long the price is valid. Diesel prices move with exchange rates and supply, so a quote without a validity period is not really a quote.

3. Agree how quantity will be measured

  • Dip your tank before and after discharge, and record both readings.
  • Check that the tanker’s seals are intact and match the numbers on the waybill.
  • Agree in advance what happens if the delivered quantity is short.
  • Remember that fuel expands with heat — a temperature-corrected figure is the fair one.

4. Check quality at delivery

Take a sample before discharge. Clear, bright diesel with no water at the bottom of the sample jar is the minimum. For large contracts, keep sealed retention samples so any dispute can be tested later rather than argued about.

5. Settle the paperwork

Every delivery should end with a signed delivery note showing the quantity received, the time, and the names of the driver and receiver. That document is what your finance team — and your supplier’s — will rely on when the invoice arrives.
